MISSION

The Italian Mission in Perù

HISTORY AND OBJECTIVES

MIPE, the Italian Mission in Peru (of the CNR- Istituto di Scienze del Patrimonio Culturale, ISPC), has operated in Chan Chan since 2002 on the basis of an agreement with the Ministerio de Cultura del Perú. The aims of the mission are the study and understanding of the urban layout and principal building types and the creation of a GIS map, the establishment of an archaeological park, the creation of a multimedia section in the Museo de Sitio de Chan Chan, and to encourage the growth of tourism through international agreements and providing training courses on specific topics.

Since 2006 the mission has collaborated with the Proyecto Especial Complejo Arqueologico Chan Chan of the Ministerio de Cultura del Perú (PECACH) for the production of an updated Plan de Manejo Complejo Arqueologico Chan Chan, the management plan required by UNESCO for World Heritage sites, last issued by the Ministerio de Cultura in 2000.

MIPE’s activity is conducted in collaboration with the Università Politecnica delle Marche (Italy), with funding from the Italian Ministero degli Affari Esteri.
